THE
PINATAS:
The piñatas are known for their use in many
traditional celebrations of Latinamerican countries but
only a few people know their true origin.
It is believed that the piñatas originated from
China and that it was Marco Polo who brought them to Italy
after discovering them in the Orient.
From Italy they were passed on to Spain. It is said that the Spanish conquerors
brought the piñatas to Mexico and from there on they were
passed on to several Latinamerican countries.
Originally,
the piñatas were clay pots covered with papers of
different colors with candies inside.
That is why it is spoken of “breaking” the piñatas.
At present the piñatas are made out of wire.
At birthday parties, the piñatas are hung by a
rope in such a manner that they can be raised and lowered.
The children take turns to hit the piňata.
Before hitting it, the child is
blindfolded, spun around several times so that
he/she loses his/her orientation and then finally given a
stick to hit the piňata. The spectators cheer and when the piňata is
finally split open the candy falls down and all rush to
gather the goodies.
The piñatas are mainly used for celebrating
birthday parties for children but there are also many
adults who celebrate their birthday parties with piñatas.
These piñatas do not contain only candy but money
as well!

PINATAS:
Las
piňatas se conocen por su uso en muchas celebraciones
tradicionales en las culturas latinoamericanas pero poca
gente sabe su verdadero origen.
Se cree que las piñatas tuvieron su origen en China
y que fue Marco Polo quien las introdujo en Italia después
de haberlas descubierto en el oriente.
Después de Italia, éstas pasaron a Espaňa.
Se piensa que fueron los
conquistadores espaňoles quienes llevaron la piňata
a Méjico y de
ahí éstas pasaron a
varios países latinoamericanos.
Originalmente,
la piñata era una olla de barro cubierta con papeles de colores, con dulces
adentro. Es por eso que se habla de
“quebrar” la piňata.
Actualmente, las piñatas se hacen de alambre.
En las fiestas de cumpleaňos,
las piňatas se
cuelgan de un lazo de tal forma que
se puedan subir y bajar.
Los niňos se turnan para pegarle a la piňata.
Antes de pegarle, se le cubren
los ojos al niňo, luego se le da varias vueltas
para que pierda la orientación y finalmente se le da un
palo para que le pegue a la piňata.
Los expectadores pegan gritos de ánimo y cuando
finalmente se ha quebrado la piňata, caen los dulces y
todos se apresuran a recoger los dulces.
Las
piñatas son usadas principalmente para celebrar fiestas de
cumpleaňos de niňos, pero también hay muchos
adultos que celebran sus fiestas de cumpleaňos con piñatas.
Estas piñatas no solamente contienen dulces sino
que dinero también!
